Access to Land-based Studies

We offer a variety of pathways into the land-based industries for learners working at entry level and level 1. Visit our Access to Land-based Studies department page to find out more.

Our Foundation Studies courses are designed to develop you for study, work or living independently. You’ll gain the practical skills to learn how to make healthy, positive choices and develop the skills and confidence to live independently or semi-independently.

The courses will help you gain independence skills in classroom and real or simulated environments, develop personal and social skills, prepare you for further training in College or at other institutions and enhance your ability to make informed life choices.

Our Foundation students are involved in a variety of projects to further build confidence and experiences, such as the Apple Project. Set up in 2017, this is a national social enterprise project with eight organisations involved across the country. Our Foundation students create delicious, fresh apple juice, jellies and chutneys, developing their skills at every stage of the process, from production to organisation and sales. Their products are even stocked in local independent shops, and our lecturers won the prestigious Green Gown Award in Glasgow in the last academic year for their work with the Apple Project.

Our Foundation students often organise bake sales and pop-up cafés around our campuses, where the public is invited to try their delicious food and apple juice. These provide an excellent opportunity to develop personal and social skills and build the confidence needed to work, especially within a sales role.

Students that would like to progress onto another course are offered supported tasters of other subjects, with the aim of facilitating progression onto a Level 1 specialist course.
